Hips click may worsen with age
Q I own a three year old Welsh Sec D x TB, whose offside hip joint makes a clicking noise when she moves. She isn't lame and the vet cannot diagnose any problem.

Also her hooves do not appear to grow. She has been on good food and supplements since I bought her seven months ago, but there has been no hoof growth to trim.

A. The cause of such problems as a clicking hip can be related to many different structures in the hip and pelvis and it is usually very difficult to pin point such problems.

The people best skilled for dealing with such problems are osteopaths and chiropractors. Ask your vet to recommend one and his opinion. The problem may be one that is inherited between the generations but I think that this is unlikely. It is sensible to try and get the problem sorted out because it is likely that the noise is a symptom of a deep seated problem that will get worse with age and result in arthritis eventually.

The fact that your horse's hooves do not grow seem to indicate that there is something wrong with the mineral balance in the diet or that your horse is not absorbing all the nutrients in her food properly. Such imbalance may also be related to the clicking.

I would advise you to start using a chelated mineral formula and a more specific hoof formula containing biotin and methionine. I find that herbs which promote calcium uptake and use are also very helpful.
